Born from necessity, the gimlet is in a family of cocktails known as "sours." Sailors and pirates alike in the 1800's suffered from scurvy while on long voyages across the open seas. Adding citrus fruits to their spirits seemed to stave off this unsavory condition while making their drinks more potable. Necessity is the mother of invention, and thus - the gimlet and other sours were created.
